The Covenant

First Covenant Church is a part of the Evangelical Covenant Church, a denomination that has its roots in the Great Spiritual Awakening in northern Europe during the mid-19th century.

“The Evangelical Covenant Church is a denomination of more than six hundred churches in the United States and Canada. It was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1885 as a voluntary covenant of churches committed to working together to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Covenant churches emphasize the Bible’s witness to new life in Jesus Christ expressed in a day to day walk with the Lord” (From the official denomination website).

The denomination is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Nearby are the denomination’s institutions of higher learning, North Park University and Seminary. For more information about the Evangelical Covenant Church, visit the denomination website.

The Evangelical Covenant Church outlines its guiding principles and values in the document “Covenant Affirmations.” The full text of this document and more about the values of the Evangelical Covenant Church are available at the denomination website.

In addition, First Covenant is part of the Central Conference within the Covenant, which plants and strengthens Covenant churches in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, eastern Missouri, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
